It’s August, nearly the middle of the month, and in spite of waiting to move our family overseas, my mind goes into “Get Ready for Alpha” mode. I’m thinking of who I’d like to invite, who’d be on my team and anticipating the joy of seeing community form around seeking God and being filled with the Holy Spirit.
If you’re thinking of running Alpha this fall, here are 3 key activities that I’d do this month.
1. Gather the team: Jim Collins in Good to Great reminded me that who comes before what. Get the right team mates. I’d have 3 main team leaders: hospitality (food, decorations, welcome), pastoring (small groups that are prayerfully and skillfully led) & an intern or helper who could float and serve where needed (clean-up, set-up, admin, phoning and learning the ropes). Need some tips to help?
Once you’ve got your team, now TRAIN THEM. Especially if they’re awesome. Get on the same page, get common language, pray together and invest in your people. Even busy, awesome team members value a leader who trains them.
2. Planning my venues: do we need to meet in the church basement, a coffee shop, youth room, school cafeteria or living room? Where are we going for our weekend away? (A cabin, a camp, another church, a long drive or a short one). Here are some great helps from Alpha Canada to help with this.
3. Activate the intercessors. If you’re into Alpha, you probably are an activist and do most of your praying while you’re walking around. There are others in your church or community who’s first call is to pray – get together with them and get praying. Here are some great ideas to make your prayer meeting the best meeting of the week from 24-7 Prayer!
Obviously there may be other things that need doing, but if you’ve gathered your team, planned your venues and activated your intercessors, you’ll be well on your way to an exciting and effective Alpha. And if you get stuck, head over to http://www.alphacanada.org and search for #runalpha.
